English breakfast

Did you know, one in five under 30s have never had a full English breakfast?

It’s an absolute travesty.

The fry up has been a staple of British cuisine for centuries. In our opinion, it doesn’t get any better than tucking into a full English on a lazy Sunday morning. It’s the ultimate weekend treat!

For those who are yet to experience this glorious culinary classic, here we’ve rounded up a list of the main components. So, why not give it a go? Buy the essential ingredients, dust off the old frying pan, and enjoy your first ever British brekkie.

What officially goes into a fry up?

Three tasty meats

Components of a full English breakfast available at Supreme Sausages

  1. Sausages

Call us biased, but when it comes to a fry up, we believe sausages are the star of the show.

The key is to invest in good quality bangers, such as those available at Supreme Sausages. Made in the old fashioned way, from quality-farm pork and a selection of the finest ingredients – they’re succulent, super fresh, and seriously tasty.

Keep things traditional and opt for our Chalgrove’s English Pork Sausages. These are no-nonsense sausages, simple yet delicious and perfect for an English fry up. Or alternatively, why not mix things up a little with our Pork, Tomato and Black Pepper variety? A winning flavour combination, these have been masterfully created by our butchers, with a heavenly breakfast in mind.

  1. Bacon

It’s not a true English fry up without a couple of rashers on the plate.

Rindless back bacon is the most traditional variety and the perfect counterpart to your British sausages. Keep it soft and succulent or serve crispy. Either way, it’s meaty, salty, and mouth-wateringly good.

Streaky bacon is also a popular option. You can choose between smoked and unsmoked varieties. Just cook it low and slow in the frying pan and drain away some of the fat so it’s not too greasy.

  1. Black pudding

For us, an English breakfast is missing a key ingredient if it doesn’t include black pudding. Rich and velvety, with a flavour that is both deeply savoury and slightly sweet. It’s the perfect addition. Either slice it thinly or tear it into little chunks and fry very lightly.

Lots of people are a bit squeamish about the dried blood. But you shouldn’t let it put you off! Black pudding is actually just a type of sausage. And to ensure it’s as tasty as possible, our butchers follow a delicious Scottish recipe and only ever use the finest ingredients.

5 other ‘essential’ ingredients

  1. Eggs

The UK consumes around 11.5 billion eggs each year. So, it’s not surprising they feature in a classic fry up breakfast! A runny yolk is the perfect way to bring the dish together and, in our opinion, they should always be served sunny side up. But if you’re partial to poached or prefer your eggs scrambled, that’s also perfectly fine.

  1. Baked beans

Let’s face it, a full English would be pretty disappointing if it didn’t have a big dollop of beans on the side. In fact, for some people, they’re just as important as the meat! If you’re short on time (or just feeling lazy), reach for a classic tin of Heinz. Trust us, nobody is judging! Or if you fancy being a bit adventurous, why not make a homemade version and add a smoky BBQ flavour?

Items on a traditional fry up

  1. Tomatoes

Tomatoes may seem like an optional extra – but we assure you, they’re not. For a start, they’re tasty. Their sweetness and acidity is a welcome contrast to the richness of the other ingredients. And they count towards your five a day. What’s not to love? To make them extra special, fry them in your leftover bacon fat and add a simple crack of black pepper.

  1. Mushrooms

Mushrooms can sometimes divide opinion. Should they be there, shouldn’t they? It comes down to personal preference – but we think they’re a worthwhile addition. White button mushrooms work particularly well for a fry up. Just cook them whole and season gently to bring out their flavour.

  1. Toast

Last but not least, a couple of rounds of toast. What is there to say? It’s the final touch. The perfect way to round off a ‘Full Monty’ breakfast. We just have a couple of pointers. Firstly, always go for super-soft, thickly sliced bread. Secondly, add a delicious knob of butter and give it plenty of time to melt!
